If your hardware isn't supported, and the kernel doesn't give any useful information about chipset IDs or anything of that sort, or if you're not sure that the device you plugged in to the computer is actually working and the computer actually sees it, you can use the following command to list all of the devices attached to the computer whether or not the kernel knows how to do anything with them.
