A more civilized way of listening to the internet radio stations, for most people, would probably involve a GUI and some mouse clicks... so that is what we'll do. My favorite music player is XMMS, the X MultiMedia System. It has been around for quite a long time so it's proven technology and it is also pretty lightweight for a GUI.
First, we need to make sure our browser has .pls files associated with XMMS, or your choice of music player.
I use Mozilla Firefox, so I go to "Edit", "Preferences", "Downloads", "View and Edit Actions", select
the "PLS" filetype, "Change Action", select "open them with this application" and browse for the path
to the XMMS binary (usually /usr/bin/xmms) or the binary of your choice of player.
If there is no entry for the "PLS" filetype, you should be able to just click on the "Tune In" button and
it should prompt you for what application you'd like to associate "PLS" files with.
Now, you should be able to click on the "Tune In" button beside an internet radio station on Shoutcast and have it start playing in XMMS automatically.
