Didn't have time to cover this properly, but there is an application that will perform software motion detection with your camera. Presumably it can do things like drop new images into a directory or email you images when things change in the frame of your camera's view. If someone would like to pick this up as a task and present on it, that'd be really nice. The webpage is here.
