In the case that you either have a server that has gone down and need an emergency stand-in or if you just have an extra machine laying around and you need some server, but you don't want to take the time to install an OS, Knoppix can be a huge timesaver.
For example we can create a Window$/Samba fileserver with very minimal effort.
- click on Knoppix->Services->Start Samba Server from the main menu.
- provide and confirm the password for the user knoppix
- symlink any directories you want to share into knoppix's home directory
Tip: If you are only using this machine as a file server, you'd get better performance from it if you boot Knoppix with "knoppix 2 lang=us" (console only mode) and then run "sambastart start" from the command line.
